Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

As Manchester United announce plans for a new 100,000 capacity stadium, let's get all the obvious jokes out of the way first.

It'll be the best stadium in the Championship
They've yet to announce which part of Surrey it's being built in
Leeds would fill double that.

One thing's for sure, they won't be financing it out of player sales.

What chance the taxpayer ends up paying for it?

None at all, paulcook. It's a commercial business building a new facility to allow it to increase profits. It'll be financed by the club taking loans out on the basis of the increased revenue when it's completed.

The public funding part of things is around some of the new housing developments around the stadium that are planned, and partial financing of some of the transport links but the stadium itself is Man Utd's cost to bear.

Ah. That sounds like a very plausible answer. I had heard (probably rantings from Liverpool fans) about some kind of regeneration project and they wouldn't be spending a penny.

There's been a lot of conflating the wider development with the stadium itself in the media (yes, mostly driven by rival fans) but the plans are very clear on the matter. It is being done in partnership with the local council (Salford presumably) but the stadium is one part of it and the wider development is separate. It only makes sense to take the opportunity to redevelop that area while the stadium is going up and the place will be in a mess for a while anyway.

(I'm not a Man U fan but my son is and he's been following the news of this development closely and getting annoyed at the falsehoods being touted around about the taxpayers millions being thrown at the richest club in the world, or not as the case actually is.)

That'll be the same Liverpool fans who shrieked about Evertons Stadium being publicy funded - It wasn't

Proof that there are sensible well informed parts of the internet if you look hard enough. Outstanding.

Ah, the beautiful game, remember that? Let's put down some jumpers and have a socially-distanced kickabout. Long shots only, and no hugging and kissing.
