I just realised England won 10-0 last night, it didn't even register the game was on what a pointless game. Reading back, I was at that Luther Blisset 9-0 win v Luxembourg too. Do you reckon there should be a pre-qualification round, so that the groups games become some sort of meaningful games, rather than a procession. A bit like the early rounds of the FA Cup, the lower ranked clubs knock eachother out? |

I tip my hat to anyone who has refereed, especially at amateur level. Tough, tough thankless gig - and a reason why I make a point never to criticise referees*. *Apart from that blind publicity seeking fucktard Keith Hackett of course 😉😀 |

I think I would like to see the qualifying groups reduced to 4, and the finals 16, so the whole thing is of a better quality and quicker, I also think if you have the lower ranked teams playing eachother, they're get better, rather than getting pissed on all the time. FIFA or whoever won't do that though, they want as much on tv as possible. |

As an England fan, this is not a surprising view. If San Marino, Liechteinstein, the Faroes and Scotland were all to campaign for pre-qualifying so the actual qualifying groups were smaller and higher quality then it might hold more weight as an idea. |

Some confederations have more than one round to negotiate as they have fewer teams in the finals. If Europe did something similar, teams could end up playing more qualifying games or the overall qualifying system could be quite lengthy. I would certainly go back to the old days of 16 teams with only top confederation sides gaining automatic qualification based on the current split. The rest to be determined by inter-confederation play-offs. Certainly not 24 teams where the top four third-placed sides also go through. Argentina (WC 1990) and Italy (WC 1994) as well as Portugal (Euro 2016) would never have got to the final otherwise. |
