Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

AAAAAAARRRRRGH!!!

I haven't swum in a pool since we moved. I decided last week that today I would screw up my courage and go to the local pool. Different app, different website, sort out cycling route, etc. Booked and paid this morning. Got swim stuff together. Looked on the website for something, thank heavens, and THE POOL IS CLOSED :-0 :-0. How the hell was I able to book? FFS. Am so cross. They took my money and everything. Tried to book at the other closest pool but their only lane session is at 12 and it's now 12.10. So pissed off. I called 5 times before someone picked up the phone. Said to email for a refund. Stupidly didn't ask for the address. No email address on the website. FFS. I have sent a contact form and also an email to an address I found elsewhere. Not holding out a huge heap of hope. Pool is closed until mid April.

I don't want to go for a run as I need another day to recover from running a long way for me on Sat. Walk it is, then :( :( :(

Oh dear, that's a complete clusterfuck!!!

Not wanting to add salt to your wounds but I had a lovely swim this morning and managed 50 lengths. My longest swim in several years I think. I'm able to do 300m with no breaks now so I'm almost ready for OW swimming once it gets properly warm.

Hope you have another pool you can get to for next time :-)

Oh Linds how frustrating! So annoying when left hand clearly hasn't met right hand. I hope whoever picks up their email is more on top of things than whoever answers the phone and does their booking system, and that you can get a swim at the other place soon.

Well done Little Nemo, sounds like great progress. I'm also looking forward to it being warm enough for our local lake to open - hopefully at Easter or soon after.

I was popping in to say I tried the Swim Smooth garmin app this morning (thanks to a free trial through the training group I've joined) and it was brilliant. The advice was to do 500-1000m with your garmin on one wrist, then swap it to the other wrist and do the same distance. I've now got a whole load of feedback on all aspects of my stroke and a list of things to work on, plus recommended drills, swim sets etc. Interestingly the stuff I thought I might need to fix was okay, and it's suggested other issues I hadn't even thought of! Couple of screen grabs below. I'd be tempted to pay for it once my trial runs out, definitely one to consider if in-person coaching isn't an option.

That looks really interesting, CasB. I might just go and check if it works with my Garmin...

Really glad you had a good swim, LN, and thanks for the sympathy. Clusterfuck is what it is. THe only blessing is that I didn't actually go and find out then. I have booked for another pool on Weds.

Amazing stats, Cas. I love that. My posh goggles do head position and that blows my mind.

I feel your pain, LindsD. Pool opening/closing times and lane availability are a pain in the bum! The new company is due to take over my pool at the start of April and I'm hoping we'll start seeing a bit of improvement in the poolside facilities (ie. we'll actually have some!).

Inthe meantime I had a lane to myself for most of the hour this morning and so I did a structured session of 2 x 100-150-200-150-100, which gave me 2k with the warm ups and downs. Very satisfying, and with an average pace for the "work bits" of 1:51/100m.

That coaching app looks interesting, CasB. I might have a look at that and see if I can find an intro freebie (because I'm a cheapskate!).

Thanks Nellers. And good set.

Two of the three local pools are out of action so I fear the other one is under a lot of pressure.

That is one of the advantages of the pool being run down to the end of the contract: A few of the regulars have moved to other pools so there's a bit more space to play.

That one remaining pool must be crammed though!

I will find out tomorrow!

They just called to say according to their records, I booked for a different pool. I checked my booking, and I definitely didn't, so they conceded that it was a fault in their system and have given me a credit. Not as good as a refund, but I guess the pool will be open eventually. In April, I think. At least they got back to me.

I think there's a seven day free trial, Nellers - just time it to start the day you next go swimming!

Glad they got back to you Linds, and hopefully you can use the credit soon. I did see recently they've approved plans for the long-term closure near you to include a new 50m pool which is positive, but obviously it'll take a while before it's built and opened.

I like the sound of the goggles too (though I don't need more goggles, I seem to have acquired several pairs!) - maybe a birthday present idea at some point 😀
