Something I'd like to give a go at some point but I haven't done map references since geography at secondary school.
Can you take dogs with you? I guess I should have a look at the website you posted earlier in the thread to read the rules.

HFE, some events may allow dogs on the courses some not, you'd have to check with each event to find out (usually its says somewhere in the event info/flyer)
FBR, on alot of event the courses are colour-coded white-brown (usually, occasionally black!) Munnki wants to do a red course because they are fairly easy navigation but are longer so are good courses for runners, i wnat to do a blue cos I am well'ard and want both the long distance and technical difficulty Munnki is being soft.

Yes I think it is, although just looking at the BOF website now and they don't list black or purple.
Besides if I'm not racing you on a red then I'm certainly not going to race you on a purple.

I have returned! Did the Orange course, which was 2.5k. Hurtled off at a great pace, missed the 1st control, had to go back. Spent most of my time for the first half dashing off at speed without looking hard enough at the map; after it took me 17 mins to find control 4, I remembered that navigation is often a lot more important than speed, so slowed down. I reckon I still covered about 5k in total though! Used an electronic dibber for the first time - aren't they cool? And a little receipt printed out at the end with the time between all the controls. And, for the full off-road experience, as well as being ankle-deep in mud in places, it HAILED on me! WHEEEE!!!

Yay! Well done quimby.
Yes dibbers are very cool, i was so over-impressed when I first used one. Remember control cards? Not good in the rain
Glad you had a good time

Of course, now I'm home, it's bright sunshine outside! Grrr.
I was startled to be told I was a W40 in orienteering - I'm not 40 until September, so I'm still a FV35 in the running world, but the two worlds seem to calculate it differently. But I still feel about 20, prancing about in the mud like a loon! I have a nasty feeling that a man who was walking the course with his dog may actually have beaten me - I saw him several times whilst I was haring about. We shall see. At least I got a good run, even if it wasn't a course-winning effort.
