We've got two very noisy musicans. Son #3 persuaded us that a full on drum kit to replace his electronic one was necessary. Proper loud, but at least rhythmical.

Son #2 adores singing along to his favourite tunes from musicals like Rock of Ages, Grease, Mamma Mia. Sadly he can't hit a single note (there are reasons for this) but he has no volume control.

It doesn't help our ears, but it's a good job we've got a detached house and accommodating neighbours.

(Son's #4 and #1 have their musical talents too, but just at a lower volume in the main!)

If oboe was the previous instrument, it feels to me like French Horn would be the way to go, though expensive probably. An amusing link to the Cor Anglais etymology too. A lovely tone, not a raspy sound anyway. Though I'd also have a soft spot for a euphonium.

Practice mutes aren't very good for beginners rb - if you really need a mute, try Yamaha silent brass - you can usually find them on a well known online tat bazaar.

Practice mute does help though it does generate quite a bit of back pressure. Yamaha does Silent brass that works quite well. I splurged on one for my trumpet.

I've got a Yamaha Silent Brass for my trumpet. It mutes things enough to be able to practice in a hotel room (as I did a few years ago when I was working away from home). I do find it hard to play with though (so it makes things feel much easier when you take it out!)

Thanks everyone.

There seem to be quite a range of practice mutes, and some of them claim limited back pressure, but that might just be them bigging up their product. I guess it's just a case of trying stuff out. It doesn't look as pricey as cello bits and pieces at least. I'm currently favouring tenor horn. I gather you can move between instruments a bit, and I want to have the option of playing in a brass band, which French horn wouldn't do. It's my favourite sound of the youtubes I've been watching :-) I gather the way the notes work on a French horn is a bit different to other brass instruments too, so harder to switch, although the sound is lovely.

How odd, I was looking at plastic brass the other day, I've always fancied having a go at playing the trombone

I was lucky to be able to borrow a French horn for a month during exams in my last year of high school...I did enjoy it, though they are pricey to buy if memory serves me correctly. That and brass band with them is out! I played cornet in a brass band when I was first over here in 1992-94...it was fun. I need to get my trumpet chops back again...they were coming along a few months ago when I picked it up again, though playing quietly was next to impossible! ;)

Tenor Horn is nice too - had quite a few friends that played those at high school, an underrated instrument.

I bought myself a harmonica last Christmas with the intention of learning to play properly but haven't progressed much; and my wife got me an ocarina for our wedding anniversary which is fun and a bit different. I always wanted to get a soprano sax but I play my clarinet little enough that it wouldn't be worth it.

Really enjoyed, with hindsight, playing in the local regional concert band when I was a teenager; managed to nick myself the position as Eb clarinetist so got to sit at the front and dive into the 1st Clarinet part when I wasn't on the Eb. But stopped when I went to Uni, and whilst I've got my kids doing lessons they've all missed out on the sort of local bands that were around when I was younger. They enjoy school bands, but the quality is never quite as good with the limited numbers.
