We’re away at present but think a bit of a try on and compare session is due when we get home. I agree they do seem quite different to the old wide fit though @flanker

Reading this while waiting for a delivery of the new mud talon myself. I've not bought any inov8 for years but ran almost everything in the xtalon years back . I've taken a bit of a punt really as they were a canny price and i've gone for the wide. I only run a few miles round the denes these days but its all hills and bottomless bog in winter. I'll let folks know what i think when they've had a decent run out. Snoot wrote:
Anyone tried the new Inov8 Mudtalon? I got a wide pair tried a few times before Lakeland 100 but dropped with sore left foot at Dalemain. I put this down to leaving my laces too tight with thick double socks and swelling. However did 4mi today in them, mix of fell / trail / road and it felt like my left foot was falling in / collapsing, quite sore on the outer edge. Not had this issue with any other shoes so interested to see anyone’s experience with the Mudtalon? |

I run with someone who started working with inov 8. As I wondered, he confirmed to me the wide fit is meant as some kind of replacement to the xtalon, and the narrow fit as the replacement to the mud talon. I got a pair of the old x talon ultras for my birthday when I realised they were no longer going to be done. So I'll be interested to see your thoughts flip. |

Got a pair of both the wide & precision MudTalon Speeds. Got the wide first but it's is too wide (on my pretty wide feet) for use as a fell shoe, but makes a damn good muddy ultra shoe. The precision is the best fell shoe I've used. I'd say the wide is more like the x-talon ultra 255 / XClaw, but wider, whereas the precision is quite like a x-talon 200/212, which have been my main shoes for years. It's far more accommodating and comfortable than a mudclaw, and might even have better overall grip. |

There's now a Trailtalon / Trailtalon speed in standard and wide. But I'm not sure where they fit in. I gave up on inov8 and bought La Sportivas (too narrow / too stiff, but will keep trying), Icebugs Acceleritas (crazy flexible, fast, light, not a bad fit; maybe too flexible), NVii ultimate F2 (probably too narrow), VJ Irock+ (the wide ones, "+"; possibly perfect). |

I find my X-talon a little snug and I am fine with a narrow fit. They are super grippy, just not very comfortable so I only wear them on proper fell races really. I had them on for the 12mile race I did at the weekend and my toe ends felt quite bashed by the finish. Rest of the time I tend to run in Salomons - I have three different pairs! Speedcross 5, XA Oribi W (lighter trail shoes, light weight and flexible but comfy) and Ultra Glide for the long distance stuff where speed/grip is not an issue. My Speedcross are about to disintegrate, not bad as I've got almost 900 miles out of the them so have ordered some Speedcross 6 from SportShoes.com and another pair of Salomon that I can't remember the model, but one I've not had before, if Evri ever decide to actually deliver them that is... |

@jacdaw Had a look at a pre-release pair of the TrailTalon a few weeks ago. They're effectively the new roclite - they actually have the same sole/tread as the new walking roclite range. A bit of a do everything shoe, somewhere between the Trailflys and the Mudtalon. It also appears that under the new (aka original) ownership, they are going to strip the range back to far fewer models, with width appropriate to purpose rather than the daft idea of offerings wide, standard, precision, and zero-drop in each model. Common sense prevails! |

Not for fell racing obvs but I spent quite a bit of time in our local Inov8 shop on Sunday afternoon, having been a Hoka lover for years and years I’ve been finding the grip on anything wet and solid i.e tarmac or hard packed trail was rubbish, bought a pair of the walking style boots online cheap and was amazed at the graphine grip so decided to chat in person about an alternative to my challengers … was immediately shown some trailfly… tried the wide as I like a bit more room, but my feet rolled in quite a lot so the sales guy suggested the standard width which I did and that solved it straight away…. Not yet run in them but was really pleased with the service and they were a good £50 cheaper than sport shoes too - win win …. If they are as comfy running as walking around the house 😂

I'm liking the simplicity of the line-up of the new Inov8 range, so far no duplication which the old range seemed to have. I think of it in terms of lug depth : 2mm - Roadfly 4mm - Trailfly 6mm - TrailTalon 8mm - MudTalon Then there's the standing and wide fit in each model. Heard that they're going to be expanding the road line-up to include a racing model (not sure how serious they are here, ie if carbon plate and/or peba foam ?), and a max cushion model, and a zero drop model |
