I didn’t get it having done the Fellsman earlier this year. I did guess the Dales but my first thought was Pen Hill / Height of Hazely partly because of the plateau shape. |

You're right, it does look a bit like Pen Hill

Despite several Fellsman I failed, although (iirc) the way you approach it along the "ridge" it isn't as prominent a hill. Plus the weather is rarely that nice on event day, and it looks different through the clag. |

Great Coum was little more than a tiny rise once you're up Gragareth and back along. I definitely didn't count it as an actual climb. From memory it was among my fastest miles of the race.

Tends to depend how wet it is as yo how fast it is. It can be one long bog along there on wet years (and a number of smaller bogs on dry years )

Does anybody have opinions on La Sportiva shoes on rough technical ground? Specifically Mutant and Jackal (ii Boa, possibly). I'm looking for Inov8 alternatives. |

@jacdaw I asked this a while ago, and didn't get much of a bite either fetcheveryone.com/forum/la-sportiva-mutant-59382/ 8 years on and I still haven't tried any of the La Sportiva shoes, but if you're still after an alternative I'd recommend trying some VJ iRocks, which are very popular up this way - I suspect more people were wearing them than inov-8s at the Arrochar Alps back in June. Very grippy shoes, and they do now have a variant for those with wider feet, although I've not yet tried those. |

I should add, I wouldn't wear iRocks for more than 6-8 hours or so, not super comfortable for long stuff. The VJ XTRM is decent too though, sacrifices a bit of grip for a bit more comfort; I used them when I did my Ramsay Round.

Thanks @zp I bought the La Sportivas, and suspect it was a mistake! They seem much too stiff for me, at least for running, but may be ok for scrambling / walking. And I might get used to them. I have been looking at VJs, Icebugs and NVii, and will probably end up with at least one of them. |

@jacdaw Good to know about the La Sportivas, think I'll give them a miss! I sometimes run in these icebug.com - less grippy than VJs but very flexible and fairly durable. Lightweight though, not a lot of protection in the upper so wouldn't want to do anything massively rocky in them. SportPursuit had them for £50 a few months back so picked up a couple of pairs; at full price they feel a bit expensive to me. |
