The FRA has had more of a policy in recent years to diversify the races and locations that host champs races - it stops them being concentrated solely in the lakes.

Not sure what the quota is - it might be that 50% have to be outside of the lakes. Usually at least one of the short ones (as there sre far more cat A short races not in the lakes) and one of the mediums.

Perhaps someone can remind me exactly how many cat A long races exist - i think it's less than 20? And pretty much all but about 5 are in the lakes.

Fewer?

Holme Moss is AL iirc and PPP has AL status again iirc in spite of no actually having necessary criteria

Off the top of my head Tour of Pendle, Three Peaks and Bilsdale (literally AL by about 3 yards, though this year was run on a different course as AM - I think as a possible pre-cursor of being run as a Champs race). Castle Carr might have been AL too.

Yep, I can see that obviously terrain is a massive factor, especially for achieving long climbs. There's a difference I assume between having a race which has 2000m of elevation chunked into 20 x 100m climbs vs one which packs that into maybe 4 or 5 climbs. Makes me feel sorry for those who live in some of the flatter parts of the UK that miss out on the discipline; I hardly live in a hilly area, but at least from our base near Chester we've got plenty of Welsh hills, plus the Peak District and the Lakes all within striking distance. If my son had not been at Uni in Newcastle he'd have missed out on this passion if he was in quite a few of the other places in the Uk that he was looking at for Uni back in the day.

There are all B cats round this way that I've seen. Fine with me though as a beginner. 3 races done and 2 prizes so not too bad at all.

No more now booked in for 2024, so will think about some harder ones for next year. Maybe out onto the peaks proper. Don't think I'm ready for Lakes racing yet 😂

Castle Carr was AL (does it still exist?).

3P I'm never sure quite why it's an AL.

There's another one on Pendle that is AL and of course Long Mynd Valleys and Edale Skyline. And Sedbergh Hills, which although Cumbria isn't in the lakes....

I thought there was another one too.

Curly - there are Cat A races and then there are some of the lakes races.

Even a short race like Blisco Dash is hard and that's one of the less technical races.
