Well done to him, that's decent; which uni does he go to? I saw a few university runners today, Edinburgh in particular. It certainly was a magnificent venue and the venue was very kind.

He's up at Newcastle, 2nd year. Trying to get his uni athletics club to take fell running more seriously!

Excellent university. My youngest went there and loved every minute. They're big on rowing and rugby I remember.

Have been doing bits and pieces in the hills in the Upper Calder Valley since I retired in May. Now actually want to do a fell race Have bought the waterproof jacket and trousers now, wife has sent them to Santa though!

Found plenty of info on waterproof gear, some races also ask for hat and gloves, but can't find any spec. Anyone have any recommendations, please?

Also emergency food what's this, a Sunday roast dinner or a couple of Haribo's. I suspect the answer is somewhere in between.

Finally any suggestions for an easy(?!) fell race in Jan/Feb/Mar, preferably in Yorkshire.

Thanks in anticipation.

Get a hat and some gloves that might make you comfortable if you broke your leg half way round a race in December. Warm and light like Polarfleece or similar might be a starter

Most races will accept a buff as a hat, but as DT says you might want something a bit warmer in winter if the worst were to happen. There's no defined specification for either hat or gloves on the FRA website (I think - someone will prove me wrong now), but I recall it might comment on the suitability of a buff as headwear.

If you want a cracking pair of gloves at a half-decent price, then the Montane Prism gloves are excellent and pack down to nothing. The Prims overshells are good too.

Emergency food: At the recent Langdale fell race a couple of gels were deemed acceptable.

Races:

Jan - Stanbury Splash is always a good laugh and not too taxing. Load up with Soreen afterwards in the pub

Feb - How about Flower Scar in Tod, that's a little belter. Ilkley Moor is a good 'un too, as close to a classic as a short race can be I think (discounting stuff like Burnsall, Grasmere etc)

March - Stan Bradshaw Round - used to be call the Pendle Half-Tour

Just thumbing through the FRA handbook for Jan/Feb/Mar I found such gems as the High Peak Marathon, Wadsworth Trog and Haworth Hobble. I'd discount all of those if I were you. I still break out in a cold sweat at the thought of the High Peak Marathon.

Any cheap and pocketable hat and gloves should be fine, certainly for the shorter/safer routes.

If south lakes is not too far the Kendal Winter League races are short and beginner-friendly IME. Giggleswick is usually the furthest south and east of these (and probably one of the easiest, being two loops of some fields at the edge of town). I think that was my first fell race.
