Oh great! Congratulations, that game was totally wild and I had no idea who was going to win.

Cheers! I was hopeful that the passed pawn would tilt things my way but was constantly feeling he must have some tricks up his sleeve that I was missing, very relieved when he moved Qe3 and I knew I had his Queen! :-)

Good to see a brilliant!!! move in your Uckfield win, jda!

Good to hear you are still playing a bit Cheg. I've stopped playing for a while now, as I started to take it too seriously and that meant it took up a lot of time and was less fun for me.

I'm lucky in that this all started up shortly after I had semi-retired. Previously I knew how to develop the pieces to reasonable squares but then had absolutely no idea how to proceed. I've been able to devote time to deepening my understanding, watched a lot of videos and even invested in some courses (particularly useful were Chessable's Checkmate Patterns Manual and 100 Endgames You Must Know)

I tend to have phases of playing a lot of games and then a few months in which I look back in more depth at what I could have done better and pick one or two things to study a bit more intently. It's also been very interesting keeping up with the Vote Chess group and seeing how better players than me assess situations. I still find 960 completely baffling, though! :-)

I don't think anyone understands 960 Goofee, I very nearly beat an IM recently, but have had my share of 10-move howlers against moderate opponents too :-)

A fun weekend at Ilkley Chess Festival, a new venture that just happens to have started up at the same time as I've returned to OTB chess. Didn't feel like I was sandbagging after losing my first game (against the eventual winner) and going R for N down in the next two but I ended up with 4 wins out of 4 and 4th place in the Intermediate (U-1750) section.

In this position in my final game I'd have loved to take the d5 pawn, but the pin on the knight was awkward so I played Nd4 instead. Went on to win easily, but what did I miss?

Nxd5 (or Ne4) threatens M2?
