Novices bonners?! Glad that your running has been helped by getting out there to look. All of us fetchies here seem pretty much au fait with what's about..apart from that I think it's novices who are more than a breath of fresh air in these days of twitching, accumulating the best "life lists" and so on. I love this thread and the way true enthusiasm comes out. Having said that, each to their own way of enjoying things. I've done the twitching malarkey in another lifetime! Waxwings will elude me this year I think.

Anyone who looks out their window and sees a blue tit or blackbird on their garden then smiles is a bird lover. There's loads on this thread and it's great

Brilliant mornings today. One of those ridiculously windy and rainy north Wales mornings where you have to grin and bear it. Very high tides on the river today meant I got to see loads of different types of waders. But most flew off before I got good IDs due to them being so much clser. further up all manner of ducks and swans on the river. Definitely mallards, shelducks and goosanders. Beyond that I'm struggling. Saw some really small ducks, no idea what they were. In answer to an earlier question, the duck with the stripey head is near in size to the mallard, just slightly smaller, the female colouring seem to fit in as well, so still guessing at a wigeon. As to some of the others, despite having a look through my books, none the wiser. Was a fabulous morning though.
Finished off going over the railway bridge and was amazed to see that the waxwings are still about in large numbers, thought the wind and rain would have seen them move on, but still plenty of berries there I guess.
My favourite sighting though were yesterday with work. Working up in the Conwy valley right out in the sticks and saw a few chaffinches and also to my great joy a couple of bullfinches. I love bullfinches and I rarely get to see them where I live.
Then today get back from my run today and the wind has blown the feeders over....the sparrows and robin are having a great party on the spillage :D

Teal are the smallest ducks you're likely to see. Look around the margins of stillwaters and estuaries for them

A treecreeper in my front garden this morning. I've been watching it creep up the cherry tree then drop back to the bottome again to start all over. All the while delicately picking something of the tree. Only my second sighting of this species in the garden. Great to see it.

Cheers Derby Tup, teal is my guess for the small ones, but wasn't quite sure.

What a treat Surelynot..I've only ever had one Treecreeper in my garden in over twenty five years. You're making me envious again bonners! The difference between north and south Wales! I suppose I could get down to what are pretty close fairly exciting habitats near by but .... Blackbirds singing all over the place this morning.

Only had one sighting of waxwing. On an industrial estate car park in Carlisle.
