Havent seen any of the thrushes/redwings, the berries on the local trees are just about gone, so pretty understandable I guess. Having said that, had some great spots this week. Saw 4 long tailed tits on a river run by the Rhuddlan bridge. Went for a walk yesterday morning and saw a Greater Spotted Woodpecker in Towyn park. On another run around the river I saw an interesting duck, it had a greyish body, but a brown head with a lighter stripe down the middle. Not a teal as we have them on the river anyway, so not 100% sure. Nearest description is a wigeon, but only on some photos and seen no ;local photos of them. Also saw the pair of stonechats by the seafront who are now regulars. Finally my RSPB gardenwatch pack turned up, here is hoping that I get a bit better than last year which mainly consisted of starlings and pigeons :D |

Cheers Derby Tup, not 100% if that is it, think its next was shorter. I'll see if I can get a better description / photo next time I'm on the river.

It does sound more like a wigeon to me. There's a lot of variation in plummage when they are in eclipse, but really should be looking more 'normal' at this time of year. Was it a small duck relative to say, a bog standard mallard?

Plenty of resident thrushes about but no winter ones. Berries on local trees were stripped before the end of November mainly by Blackbirds. Lots of bird song along trails this morning and catkins out. Two Goosander , as usual when I see them when I'm running they are quite nervous once they see me! |

We had a pied wagtail visit today. Never had one visit in the two years we have lived in this house. Nice to see.

Unbelievable today, went out for walk in the mountains, came back and unpacked the car, waxwings!!! Ended up almost getting run over tracking them! Turns out four different flocks have been spotted in Kinmel Bay today numbering several hundred. Tomorrow's run is with rucksack and binoculars! Can't believe my luck, was a perfect end to a fab walking day |

WW, you have made me think. There are lots of pied wagtails around us, I see them almost every day. I don't ever remember seeing one at out house though, in 17 years. How strange!

Heinzster, I seem to see them most often in out of town shopping centre carparks or areas of lots of hard standing. I use to see a lot of grey wagtails along the canal where we lived in Watford, Northampton. |
