A flock of 10 or so Goldcrests enjoying the Ash tree keys by the Trent today. A report of Waxwings in the area a couple of days ago, but no news since.

Merlin. I spotted it while I was driving down the M1 not a million miles from a RSPB wetland reserve and thought "it's a lone redshank or similar". Then I realised it was a raptor and small. Kestrel? No. Hobby? Not in December! Male sparrowhawk? No "my bird" was all angles not curves and had rapid continuous wingbbeats, not glides. Peregrine? No, I've seen lots of peregrines and it didn't look right. Hence merlin I reckon (I've been to the wetland and it's just the kind of place mipits, skylark, finches etc would over winter ie merlin food)

Enjoyed watching my favourite bird. Long tailed tits. Lovely to see feeding away around the garden.

Didn't see much on a rainy, dawn run except a small clattering of about 100 Jackdaws getting ready to leave their roost.
10 Goldcrests is a good obs Chrisitymas!

I've currently got eleven collared doves, two wood pigeons and a squirrel out there. I wonder what that signifies for Christmas?
