We have some peregrine falcons nesting on the roof here at work (14 floor building). They do well to keep the pigeons away but are quite noisy.

We seem to have had a recent influx of starlings, sparrows and goldfinch into the back garden.

Goldfinches seem a lot more common in gardens than they used to be, not just a bird for the hedgerows and fields. Grey Wagtail by the canal today, and 28 young rabbits running off as i cycled by. |

Chrisity--in a recent survey the BTO found that during the winter 2105/16 57.3% of "Garden Bird Watchers" reported seeing Goldfinches- which was one of the highest reporting rates for a winter period in the UK. It's a definite as you say, that Goldfinches are more common in gardens than they used to be. I'd go as far as to say that they are more common everywhere in the countryside too.

We also have goldfinches and starlings in our garden. What I have not seen for ages is a greenfinch. I know they had problems with disease but wondering how serious their decline is?

Decline to 2008 shown here: bto.org Anecdotally, I think they are recovering a bit up here (in northumberland). |

Interesting reading. I hadn't realised their numbers had risen so much previously. Let's hope the recovery spreads.

Down here (Cardiff area) and along my regular running routes over the last year or two, Goldfinches are a daily occurrence but over the last year or two Linnets have disappeared.
