Thank you! Wheatear definitely. Just saw them again and compared them to my book. The black mask is a giveaway now.

I had a thrilling experience today while out for a cycle on a v quiet road through pine woods out the other side of Pluscarden. So, quite a few hares lolloping about - there are loads of hares here in Miltonduff. Then coming down the centre of the road was something with a weird gait. I thought to myself “That poor hare’s injured”. As it got closer, I realised it was a pine marten. My first! I had stopped the bike at that point and it moved off the road into the trees when it saw me. That’s made my day/week.

Red Squirrel, wow! Never seen one. Lucky you! What time of day/night was this? They're not normally out in daylight, are they?

They are usually nocturnal, aren’t they. I wasn’t expecting it to be one, so after initially thinking hare; and when I saw the bushy tail: “What’s a cat doing out here?”; finally the penny dropped. It was about 10:00 on a dull morning.

Wow!

I’ve had a lovely wander round Ouse Fen this morning - my first singing skylark of the year and my first ever bearded tit. Very happy :-)

I heart a chiffchaff today. I also heard a bird in a pine tree making a rhythmic zrrp call. Anyone know what this might be? It was like a ringtone - a chirping zrrp in the top of a pine, quite high-pitched.

I killed a wren yesterday on our way home from a break in Galway. It whirred out of a hedge in front of me, saw a car coming the other way and doubled back. Nothing I could do about it, but I feel very guilty.

Sardinian warbler everywhere today on Gozo and I spotted a bright almost turquoise songbird maybe the size of a song thrush, which I presume was a blue rock thrush. The other bird here is the Spanish sparrow. Their chirping is a constant backdrop. They are fabulous

Lovely, DT! Probably my best bird moment of 2022 was seeing a blue rock thrush for the first time, on a wall of the spectacular Chateau de Peyrepertuse high up in the hills of the south west of France. Wouldn't have said it was turquoise, though, but definitely blue/dark blue. Maybe different if caught by the sun? Definitely not a roller? Too small, I presume.
