Disturbed an owl at close quarters when I finished my run in the dark on Saturday night, but still (life) waxwingless too.

Can’t quite believe what happened today - I was walking into town talking on phone to Youngest and telling him I was jealous because he saw crossbills at the weekend. I then heard a noise we both instantly recognised, looked up and saw about 30 waxwing in the mistletoe in trees on the other side of the road!. They flew off pretty quickly but absolutely made my day

Fantastic, HellsBells! I have mentioned this before, but my first ever sighting of waxwings was when I stepped out of my front door at my former house, heard some interesting bird noise and looked up to see a bunch of them on the TV aerial of the house opposite. They subsequently moved down into a silver birch tree in my front garden.

Some extremely vocal and loud owls on tonight’s run across the moors. I’d say in at least 3 different pieces of woodland though I’m not sure how far the calls carry so the 2nd and 3rd cacophony may have been the same. Never heard such loud and prolonged calling.

First curlew call of the year today; they must be starting to return to breed. There have been reasonable sized groups of lapwing here for a couple of weeks now, with the same plan in mind. And today I counted a group of more than 30 Chaffinches picking about under my garden feeders, with more in the hedge. Siskin and Goldfinch on the niger feeder, and on the burdock seed heads. Lots of Greenfich and LTTs. A brief visit from a female Sparrowhawk, kept them on their toes. |

The only conclusion I was making were the owls were mating calls too. There was definitely flirting going on the first set I heard.
