Today was a walk along the shore path at Whitehead then round the lighthouse and down the cliff path. it was beautiful right up to the point we got back in the car, when the rain came on. šŸ˜Š
Lots of oystercatchers, robins, an eider, several seals bobbing up and down and a pair of ravens following us just off the edge of the cliff.

Interesting sightings in the last couple of days:

1. A flock of what I am pretty sure were linnets, doing a kind of murmuration over fields.
2. A small flock of yellowhammers - never really think of them as flocking birds but in winter they are.
3. A black-headed gull with black head! Well, not actually black, of course, more deep brown, but the point is it was in summer plumage. Any ideas, anyone?
4. At a local lake, a great white egret, a pair of gadwall, many tufted ducks.

The goldfinch in my in-laws garden look magnificent now with fabulous coloured plumage. Spring is around the corner and we all know what the birds and bees do then . . .

So you're suggesting, DT, that the black-headed gull may have just been getting a head start on the others in terms of changing to breeding plumage? Interesting possibility.

Getting his head in front yes. I guess it's possible he enjoyed it that much last time he's forgotten to change for next time

He's maybe in danger of burning himself out early in the season. We've all been there.

The fenns here at my sister have filled up with water after far too much rain. It is a protected bird reserve but it has been so dry for several years, most have disappeared. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for them to come back.

Saw what I think was a few common redpolls at the end of my run today, at the edge of a field at the border of town.

Not SledRunner, nice shot. Groovy little birds, redpolls. We used to get one on our feeder in the garden in winter, but not for 3-4 years now. In fact, we're not seeing the same range of birds at all and I don't know why, it's a bit disappointing.

Also missing this year, for me anyway locally, is the large number of fieldfares I have seen in the local fields in recent winters. I've seen very few this year, don't know why. Did see some redwings earlier on, though.
