Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I think it is a spot red. It just looks 'smarter' than a redshank, plus the bill is longer / finer

Where's flyingfinn when we need him?

I cycled past my other barn today and saw some swallows flying around so they haven't all gone yet.

I'd go spotted red too. Longer, darker bill with only slight red at the base, longer legs, and generally more elegant. Shame you didn't get a shot in flight as then it's easy :)

A very experienced birder I know, who coincidentally had a spot red on a local Brontë country reservoir last autumn, thinks 'standard' red

I’m in Morayshire end of this month - Elgin and surrounds. Any tips for what to look out for at this time of year?

There are a lot of really nice woodlands around. Particularly Fochabers and Torrieston forestryandland.gov.scot

Also, you're not far from Spey Bay where the dolphin centre is located. scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk

Thanks Ronnie. The Spey Bay site has what to look for and when - really, really helpful.

I do know the area well, as I stay with family most years; but my family are farmers, so I sometimes have to go it alone on the bird and animal-watching as they’re busy working. I should get a day out with my cousin, who’s a ghillie. I’ll be doing a lot of cycling too. My elderly uncle tells me he’s slowed down quite a bit, which means I won’t have to keep rushing to catch him up, as I often stop and get the binoculars out.

Previous highlights were nesting ospreys at Boat of Garten and a hoodie crow we surprised in the road while out cycling. A few red squirrels too of course.

I’ll be trying to get out with any local birding groups if the meets coincide with my holiday.

Torrieston is where I go running on springy trails - uncle is in Miltonduff. I also ran with a club from Focabers one time I was up there - we carried a baton that was going round the UK coastline.
