Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

What got me, even though I knew it was the case, was the absolute silence of its flying, despite constantly changing height and direction.

A good 3 hours today at Keyhaven. Lots of birds, some treats, in fairly overcast weather.
The pics here - I'll be blogging it in a few days.
Rough order of appearnace, although many more than once!
Lapwing. Linnet (in flocks?). Great Black-Backed Gull (they're enormous!). Oycs. Heron. Geese (Brent). Pied Wagtail. Shoveller (?). Small Egret. Turnstones.
Spoonbills.
Godwits and all sorts, Dunlins, Little Stint.
Black-headed Gull. Redshank. Grebe. Curlew (although a bit small, maybe Whimbrel?). Ringed Plover. And I suspect a Sandpiper Curlew or 2.
And probably a whole lot more. Including a fuzzy Marsh Harrier on a post as backdrop to flying geese.
And a pint at the end.
Photos 'courtesy' of a loan / test drive camera and lens from Canon.

Little stint is smaller than dunlin. Not sure you got one. Please post the 'redshank' with the red plant behind it - I think it might be a spotted redshank, a 'spot red'. Lots of turnstone and dunlin. Think the birds with their bills buried are curlew sandpiper but as often the case something familiar by them for size comparison would be handy. I think your curlew are curlew, not whimbrel

Or ruff? Difficult when the heads are like they are. Ruffe are medium size waders with relatively small heads (I always think a bit pigeon like). Bill is short, size and plumage varied)

I think there are teal, a shelduck, curlew sand, and probably spotted red. Also starling should get a mention.

Not sure I can see a whimbrel; which one do we think it might be?

Thanks all - yes, I missed the starlings in my list. Never even wrote them down.
Bird watchers with better cameras and some fairly big telescope things listed ruff amongst what they'd seen.
The 2 teal (?) were in a group of about 20, all heads just under the water, skimming horizontally. Most of the birs seems to spend all their time heads down. I guess either hungry or a lot of food about.

Whimbrels? I wasn't too sure about the curlews in the grassy field. They just looked a bit on the small side to me.

Redshank with the red plant? This one?

Heading to Mull in October. Does anyone know if it would be worth doing the wildlife boat tour to Staffa and/or Treshnish? I am fairly sure all seabirds will be gone by then, but not sure if anything replaces them that would be worth seeing.
