Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

For anyone who may be interested in these types of vagrant birds and local enough, there’s been a brown booby around Teesside the last couple of days. Seen some very nice photos of it at South Gare today

Didn’t manage to see it today when we went down to the beach though it was far from the day’s priority.

Though we did manage to be about a foot away from what appeared a young guillemot swimming and diving. It was barely flustered by a few people around it in the sea.

Just got back from a walk, in the dark. Almost stood on a bird sitting in the road. On closer inspection it turned out to be a nightjar! A first for me.

It flew away.

I ran by my "local" barn yesterday and it looks like the swallows have now gone, they were still there a few days ago.

I am probably off to Keyhaven tomorrow, with a Canon 'test drive' loan of camera and lens.
Weekend sightings seem to include 'curlew sandpipers'. Which look just like dunlin, to me.

Any recommendations of how I should tell them apart?
(also spoonbills, and a (presumabley an IoW) a osprey in the area, but I should be able to ID those)

First ever house martin over my garden this evening, high up. I wonder was it already on its way?

Curlew sand is slightly smaller than dunlin with a longer and down-turned bill. The young, which there's a good chance of seeing have a lovely peachy coloured flush to their chest. The species diesn't have a dunlin's black tummy 'smudge'. They're fabulous birds

I was taken by surprise last night on my run. Was out in the Peak District just before sunset and got to see a Barn Owl at eye level with me hunting in the heather 😀

It soon buggered off silently when it saw me.

I've been out for a little run and heard a tawny owl right above my head calling in the dark. Fantastic experience
