I went to 6th form in Marple :-)

Etherow Country Park is close by and once you get away from the main carpark has both pied and spotted flycatcher in the woods, along with a lovely group of mandarin ducks on the river heart, plus good chance of kingfisher and dipper too.

Very good day for wildlife yesterday - female sparrowhawk casually flapping from one wood to another in the morning.
In the evening, looking at the river Wear in Durham town centre - salmon jumping and 2 herons flying.

HowFar?
White tailed eagle! I was kayaking on Lough Erne when it appeared from an island, flew straight towards me for a bit, then (thankfully) decided I was too big to eat and turned and flew off in the opposite direction.

I have seen massive birds here before and thought it might have been them, but this was much closer and I am pretty certain that it was the eagle.

It was mightily impressive.

Impressive, HowFar!

To my dismay I note that the swifts have gone. Haven't seen one over the garden for a few days now.

I was going to ask about swifts! I heard a few high up earlier in the week but we should cherish any seen in coming days. Never mind they’ll be back in eight and a half months! heart

I'm puzzled as to what it is which signals to the swifts that it's time to leave. It certainly can't be cooling temperatures. Maybe shorter daylight hours? Or does the density of flying insects in the sky start to drop?
