We have an active wren's nest in the porch just outside our front door. Every time we step out of the door the wren flies off into the nearby hedge. Seems very late to be nesting, and from the lack of chick sounds I suspect it's still on eggs. I'm assuming 2nd brood, but may even be 3rd?

Saw a grey heron eat a small rodent, probably a water vole at Willen Lake this evening. Not a large heron, maybe a young one stood at the edge in the water and watched the reeds intently. We turned to look at a juvenile grebe diving and catching fish and then heard a squeaking sound. The heron had the rodent in its beak and a bit of stick. It had a couple of goes at shifting it all about until the stick dropped and it lined the unfortunate creature up and shook it a few times, then down in one.

Amazing to see, icemaiden, but shame about the water vole, they're not that numerous!

Assumed as a water vole as it was by water. Small squeaky thing that we didn't see for long! Could have been water shrew as might have been white underneath, and quite small.

Nice view of a peregrine falcon soaring and calling in Manifold valley in the Peak District yesterday. Singing chiffchaffs and willow warblers in the hills today, first for a while.

We got to see a very happy Spotted Flycatcher on Monday posing fabulously in a dead tree. Spotted by KinkyS, enjoyed by all ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ˜€

J2R if you're in the Peak there are certainly Spotted at Carsington Water (and no doubt numerous other places such as Padley Gorge).

Thank, ff, I'll keep an eye out. I'm on the edge of the Peak District (Marple Bridge) for a few days, with trips planned to Kinder Scout and somewhere more local.
