Just to add a little balance to the Guardian story; this is what the govenment is saying:

gov.uk

If the Guardian is correct in dismissing this, it would have to be a deliberate multi agency cover up.

The Guardian independent expert seems to be qualified to BSc level only, and mostly writes on radioactive pollution.

Something (probably multiple things) are going wrong in the North Sea at the moment, but linking dead crabs to dead guillemots to sick dogs to Tees dredging without any real evidence seems to be in the realms of conspiracy theory at the moment. Not saying the links aren't there, but I haven't seen them.

I think history tells us that that there doesn't have to be a multi agency cover up for government studies to fail to properly investigate things. Just each agency acting with the bounds of it's job description and answering the questions that were asked not the ones that should have been asked.

I take your point about the current lack of real evidence to link it to the dredging but equally I find DEFRA's response rather too convenient and smacking of "nothing to see here, everyone move on". Unfortunately there are far too many cases where similar initial responses from governments of all shades have later been shown to be seriously lacking for me to be able to accept DEFRA's answer at anything like face value. And plenty of cases where 'amateurs' have arrived at the correct answer long before those constrained by contracts and livelihoods have been able to share everything they know or suspect.

No doubt time will tell who is right but by then unfortunately the damage will probably be irreparable.

If you want an example of why I don't trust DEFRA and their ability to obfuscate and fail to (at least publicly) see what is in front of them because of political expediency you have to look no further than BSE. And don't lets start on Badger culls...

Went for a walk in Bentley Woods (Wilts, 4 miles N of home) today, starting just before 2pm.
About a mile in, noticed a hide (bird, deer or badger or other) a few hundred yard off the path.

Got home and googled it ... and saw someone had recorded a white tailed eagle at 13:20. Miffed! Although in the woods, it would be very lucky to spot it, if not in a big clearing, like the hide.

I did, however, spot a 'flock' (20-30 ish) of unknown (to me) birds in a field ... later identified (through fairly poor photos at distance) as fieldfares. The first I have seen, that I have known.

I saw between 2 and 4 Barn Owls this evening, depending on whether the first one I saw was also the second, and maybe even the third. It could have been sneaking over the fields while I was on the road. The fourth was definitely a different bird.
