Today's birding highlight was a golden eagle soaring over us as we did a mountain run not far from Kyle of Lochalsh. But the overall wildlife highlight has to be the otter we got a great sight of swimming in the local bay (amazingly I had my binoculars with me!). It went into the seaweed at the side of the bay and disappeared, so we assumed it swum away, but when we walked out on to the little headland, we heard a crunching, chomping sound and realised the otter must have come out of the water with its catch and was just below us, eating it. It sounded like it was a crab or something. The otter then obviously became aware of us and scuttled off through the bracken. Among various interesting sightings yesterday, one notable one was a tiny slow worm, no more than 6-7cm in length, crossing the road (fortunately a very quiet road). Today we saw a number of tiny toads up the mountain as well, the size of my little fingernail. |

One other thing I've been seeing is big mixed flocks of mainly goldfinches and chaffinches but with greenfinches as well, in the crofting farmland where there are masses of seeds to eat. I also spotted a bird which was clearly a warbler and which looked to me like a whitethroat, in terms of overall colour and size, but without a white throat. Any suggestions? I am tending to think garden warbler but I didn't get a good enough view.

Finally identified the birds I've seen little flocks of round here, in coastal farmland in north west Scotland. It's been confusing me. They're twite in winter plumage. Not so familiar with twite, only see them occasionally.

A stop off yesterday afternoon at a small gravel pit reserve by the junction of the A50 and A38 produced almost nothing until a swimming otter hove into view. It's the first one I've seen in Derbyshire 😀 Interestingly the reserve is currently having a secure fence installed around it's perimeter ready for the introduction of Beavers in the next month or so bbc.co.uk . Not sure what impact that will have on the Otters which are reported to move between the various gravel pits in the area and the nearby river? |

A first for me on our walk tonight, a common gull, living by the coast I'm sure I've seen one before, but is was great to see one up close and see just how different they are. Plenty of swallows still around, saw plenty of wheatears tonight as well. Waders seem to be appearing in greater numbers but all a bit too far off today. |
