We visited nationaltrust.org.uk today. There were very confident robin, great and blue tit and chaffinch around the outside tearoom area, but only one of each. My parents went to Ballycastle and saw two dolphins from the beach as they were looking out to Rathlin |

Nice place, Heinzster! My partner took the ferry over to Rathlin from Ballycastle a couple of years ago and had dolphins following the boat. Lucky her!

Dropping off Carn Mor Dearg on the way to Aonach Mor today a sudden movement just off the trod caught my eye and a Ptarmigan plus 3 or 4 very young chicks scuttled away into the longer grass. Made my day 😀

Mum and Dad were up in Ballycastle today, Heinzster. I’ll have to ask them if they spotted any dolphins. They were planning on having fish and chips from Morton’s, on the sea front, so hopefully the dolphins had left some for Morton’s boat to catch. I went off to the River Drowes again and was not disappointed. The river is very low, after a long spell with no sustained rainfall, but I did see several grilse splashing in pools, on their way up to the lough. The dipper was there again this week. About a mile downstream from where I spotted one last week. I don’t know how big their territory is - or even if they are territorial. The reeds along the banks were full of damsel flies and mayflies continued to hatch. There were a couple of added bonuses this week. One was the grey wagtail, which flew past a couple of times, landing on a rock midstream on both occasions. The other was the electric blue flash of a kingfisher on its arrow-straight flight path upstream. |

Dipper are territorial HF? The males sing in winter like robin. Look out for the tell tale white marks of poo on rocks if you suspect they could be about

Dippers also seem to be unable to fly without "squeaking" which is often the first sign. DT, There is possibly a LEO not far from you, in Hebden Hay. Colleague grabbed a phone picture of an owl in a tree. It's not a great picture but looks far more LEO than TO. We seem to have a new regular on the window feeder - a coal tit. Great to see one close up. In less good news we have been adopted by a fat woodie who will empty a feeder in a couple of hours. With it, and the jackdaws scoffing nuts and fat balls in hours, feeding is becoming too expensive and not serving the purpose of supporting the smaller birds. Need a new strategy. |

Here it is squirrels. My neighbour, elderly, keeps feeding the birds then asks me to deal with the squirrels. She doesn't seem to understand it is her that attracts the ruddy things that then proceed to destroy all my fruit and veg 🤬🤬🤬 I think relying on nature to feed the birds during the Spring/summer puts off "predators" to the easy pickings of bird feeders. |
