Stopped my interval run to watch a kestrel hovering at the coast this morning.

Also spotted a yet to be identified small brown bird with a flash of white on its wing as I walked up the scrubby hill from the beach. Smaller than a sparrow, and I scared it off so only got the briefest glimpse.

On a walk up the river tonight, several pairs of common sandpiper and a female goosander with 8 chicks. If they are the same ones I saw a few weeks ago, they are doing well.

And finally, a young bird I took to be a robin, but it seemed to be reddish under its tail. Decided I was imagining it, then noticed a male redstart a respectful distance away. So that was a juvenile redstart then.

Pretty sure it wasn't a sedge warbler, ff, as I'm very familiar with those and this wasn't quite the same, and the habitat was a long way from water. It was more like an alarm call that sounded sedge warblery. I suspect it will remain mysterious.

Great walk round The Roaches today, with meadow pipits and willow warblers everywhere, curlews singing, but the main highlight for me was a really good view of a spotted flycatcher, the first I've seen for years.

Got close up to a male snow bunting on Ben Nevis on Sunday, singing away like I wasn't there. Lovely little fella 🙂

Don't think I've ever seen a snow bunting in summer in this country, although I regularly see them on the Norfolk coast in winter. Interesting spot!

Snow bunting call / song is worth learning. I had a group pass overhead while I was on Coniston massif one winter

Not a huge amount of bird song here now

I've just seen a sparrowhawk catch a bird in my back garden. Think it was a starling but too fast to be sure. They would be absolutely terrifying if you were a wee bird!
