Blackbird in the greenhouse now has chicks. I'm keeping my greenhouse visits to a minimum and synchronising with Mrs Blackbird. Hoping it doesn't get too hot in there.

It amazes me where birds nest, I've seen two different spots where bluetits are nesting in tiny holes in metal gateposts. Surely the chicks don't stand a chance?

Sadly we think the baby blackbird in our back garden was predated. We didn't see it one day and then the next when we went up onto our garage roof there were lots of fluffy feathers, the remains of a carcass and a crow on a nearby roof.

Metal gateposts seem a popular choice with blue tits - seen a few over the years. At least they aren't going to fall victim to a GSW drilling out a bigger hole!

I have rather a quantity of bean sticks, as several years running, a songthrush would make a nest on them. Also, blackbirds usually like my long ladder, so I now keep the pruning ladder elsewhere, not on the same hooks behind the drying shed. The robins like the temporary fencing... Of which I now also have two sets... And the crate with shade netting, which hasn't been used for yearsas a result. I keep the shade netting on the greenhouse on in winter now. Tiptoeing around nesting birds is fun though
