A large murder of corvids in the tree behind my garden today. Pair of magpies, 15 + rooks and 3-4 jackdaws. All yelling loudly at a cat in the tree

Run along the chesterfield canal towpath lots of mallard moorhens and coots. One grey wagtail was a colourful highlight

More winter ducks yesterday. As well as a number of Goldeneye there were two pairs of Pintail. The male in particular is such an elegant duck, always makes me think of someoone in a very smart suit 😀 I failed to find the Great Northern Diver though despite it still being around. Mind the squall of driving rain that came through didn't really help. When the surface of the water gets broken up like that it tends to lie very low in the water making it hard to find. It basically being black and white in poor light doesn't help either! |

Didn’t get chance to post after yesterday’s run. Ran mainly of paths through farmers fields. Yellow hammer ,partridge , buzzard (saw 2 but think it was the same bird twice), blue great and long tailed tits, jay and a group of gulls following a farmer ploughing his field. From what I could see mainly BH with a few herring gulls

riggys99, nice to see yellowhammers. Far fewer of those around these days than there were a couple of decades back, alas. I have now established that we have both a male and a female great spotted woodpecker visiting the garden daily. They're both partial to peanuts and suet pellets. |

I heard an unfamiliar chirping in a local hedge yesterday and it turned out to be a dunnock. Their song is more warbly than many warblers but I’d not heard this, what I suspect was a contact call , before. Also saw another (or possibly same) continental blackbird

Went looking for a Snow Bunting that was reported close by this morning but no joy. However, did get some excellent views of a party of Lesser Redpolls feeding on the thistles. One very obligingly spent several minutes feeding in the same open spot and allowed a great view through the scope. They are such a pretty little bird 😀
