Still lots of Mipits and Wheatear on the Lakeland tops yesterday, even when it was hissing it down. Given Wheatear were moving through at home last week I had wondered if they would be all gone from the tops but still plenty around.

Still got the odd curlew round here, and some small flocks of golden plover. Wheatears still active, too.

Trudge across a muddy saltmarsh yesterday. Calling curlews here and there, a favourite, and meadow pipits investigating the creeks.

Can anyone tell me what the 'subsong' is about? For the last couple of days, I've had a robin perched on a post doing the full robin song, but with the volume turned right down to 2, sometimes even 1 so it's scarcely audible. It's charming, but strange. Meanwhile other robins (or perhaps even the same one) have been singing away at full volume at different times.

Last night's walk was a very memorable, round the river and for once had my binoculars on the 'wrong side of the river'. Curlew on the mud flats in huge numbers with fantastic noises coming out. Tried counting up to 25 and then estimating how many clumps, reckon must have been in the region of 300. Eerie wonderful sight.

J2R - possibly a juvenile practising, and/or not wanting to upset the big boys too soon?

bonners, wow! Curlews are among my favourite birds. Their call is so magically evocative of wide open spaces, whether upland moorland or saltmarsh/mudflats.

um, interesting possibility. If only this reticence about high volume were shared by juvenile humans. :)
