The ones we're getting (as with most of the hirundines) are definitely moving through heading south rather than local breeders. The water pulls them in for a b+b with a full bug breakfast before moving on. The Martins and Swallow counts leaving the roost sites most days this week have been up in the hundreds.

lots of Martins flying between the beech trees on the village green behind my garden this evening - more than I've seen at once all summer.

What I actually came to post though was a Tawny owl sat on the garden fence about 10ft from my sofa :) that really is a first

Lots of house martins today, feeding frantically. I should have stayed to watch as the notparkrun turned into 4.2 ish miles, getting lost, muddy and running through lots of nettles. My legs are still stinging 😕. One of my fellow notparkrunners has renarkably high pitched girly screams for a 30 something year old bloke.

Incredible number of acorns on the Oak this year, and also sweet Chestnuts in abundance. Reckon the squirrels will get knackered hiding them all.
4 years ago i saw a squirrel burying chestnuts, with a magpie walking along behind him digging them up again.

ooo - I need to go see if the chestnut tree has dropped any, I love sweet chestnuts!

Still lots of martins flying above the trees on the green behind the garden fence, haven't seen a swallow for a while.

Watched the last clutch of sparrows from the nest under the kitchen window fledge this morning - will make sure they have plenty to eat over the next few weeks.
