Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Is that the latest IS II incarnation of the 100-400m Um? If so I can recommend it.

I shoot with a 400m 5.6 L on a 7D MKII and had a short play with a mates zoom. To my eyes there's not an awful lot between image quality (both on my body and my mates 80D) wideopen and at full focal length. However the zoom has much more going for it in terms of flexibility, minimum focusing distance and obviously IS for poorer light.

I am semi-tempted (very tempted) in swapping over to one myself but from my perspective having used a 400mm about 12 years I'd probably put any future lens money towards a secondhand 500mm f4 instead.

On a bird related note, I spent a good chunk of Saturday watching about a dozen Black-necked Grebes swimming around one of my local haunts.

Just clarifying from flanker's earlier post that the factor on a Canon on APS-C sensor is 1.6x, therefore equivalent to 160 - 640mm.

Weath & flanker - thanks. Yes, looking at the EF IS II on an 80D (APS-C), superceding a 70-300 that is struggling on full zoom and anything but bright sunlight.

Available light is still going to be your limiting factor at f5.6 and you're likely to still finding it wanting occassionaly under UK conditions for the smaller 'on the move' wildlife where faster shutter speeds tend to be needed.

That being said, that camera/lens combo is certainly very capable of nailing great shots and you'll certainly appreciate that extra 100mm with skittish birds.

Weath - I know :-). But as 150-600 is a relatively standard zoom (Sigma, Tamron, etc) it seemed a better comparison.

The 100-400 is on my wish list to replace my old 150-600, also for a 7D MkII. I've only had a quick test drive, but the IS on it is now meant to be good for a few stops too which I'm hoping will help with low light.

Heard another yellowhammer in a completely different place to last time
And a few minutes later I watched two wood pigeons telling a barn owl that its presence was really not liked - about 2 miles as the owl flies from "my" owl and out hunting at 8am so hopefully there is another local pair?

Spotted fly, but none of the pied variety, and no sight or sound of the wood warbler yesterday afternoon.
