Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Think I heard and saw a garden warbler yesterday. Still find song difficult to reliably distinguish from blackcap, and didn't get a clear enough view to be sure, but I'd give it 80% probability. I've seen them there before. Also nice clear view of a sedge warbler. Very warblery run early evening.

Good warblery run here this morning as well. Very vocal Garden Warbler close to where I saw my first one on Saturday and a Whitethroat just a little further on plus the usual chorus of Chiffs, Blackcaps and the Reed Warblers in the local reed bed who seem particularly loud this year, possibly because of their proximity to the main road which is quieter than ususal. Lots of Swallows over the water but I've still not spotted a Martin amongst them, maybe need to take the bins with me one morning. Over the reed bed there was also a Blackbird this morning that seemed to be trying to mimic the Oycs that regularly pass his perch going from the res to the fields. Also saw a brood of 4 or 5 Gadwall that looked very tiny.

Breeding gadwall is nice

We have a distant thrush or starling which is doing a decent curlew impression

Wonderful pair of Bullfinches regularly in my garden they must be nesting nearby as usual, the male's colour is so startling against the green of young vegetation! :)

Lots of Song Thrush today - got to stop and watch three of them, and a blackbird, looking for fat worms and picking up mossy stuff.

Stood listening to one on my way back round the loop too. Really lovely and loud.

Standard haul on local dog walk (dipper, chiff, blackcap, LTT) eclipsed by flock of 8 - 10 swallow feeding near Oakworth station. They were barely ten feet above the deck and it felt like they were all around my head at one point. Fantastic cheery experience :-)

When we eventually move to a house with a garden I am going to make sure we have loads of things to attract birds and insects, and a pair of binoculars permanently at hand.

I'm such a novice and only really got into wildlife watching and photography this year, but I really miss seeing a variety of birdlife from my regular trips to wildlife places in north east England. My view from a 3rd story window less than 200m from a beach gives me mainly herring gulls, corvids and pigeons. I did see a magpie this morning.

Any advice from the fetch birding types - we have a wren industriously building a nest 2m from our back door in a yucca type tree about 1.5 metres off the floor, and we have two cats. They don't want to go out now it's raining, but do sit and chatter at him (assuming its a him building nest to attract mate).

Should I just leave nature to take its course, or trim the leaves back so it's a less ideal site?

A first for my front garden today with the visit of a solitary greenfinch. Very handsome.

Hope he brings a few pals.
