River levels here have been very high, and very fast flowing. I suspect that's probably not good news for local kingfishers, although maybe other waterways might temporarily become viable feeding areas where they are normally not.

How river fish not only survive but flourish during periods of extremely high water has fascinated me for decades. Nature is very clever

C-Cat
My lunch time walks by Tocil Pools are a great way to break up a work day 🙂 this December we have gooseanders outnumbering the mallard and tufted ducks combined. Never seen so many in one place. Egret count is up to 4 on some days and the usual grey herons are about.

Long-tailed tits are fairly tame around here too.

Like the cute bunch of long-tailed tits, C-Cat! Little flocks of them always make me smile.

A pair of gorgeous bullfinches in the park yesterday. Over the years I have on seen them about 5 times, 3 times in this spot several years apart.

spent a few minutes watching the Pinkies fly in this evening. Some of the first arrivals landed in one field and the rest the other side of the path/hedges. They stood and honked at each other for ages. The next dozen or so flew in and chose the western field. The ones the other side honked a bit and then two at a time chose to fly over to the other field. Then some more came in and chose the eastern field - so some from the western one joined them. This pattern went on for ages. I assume that eventually they'll all be in the same place, but it was fascinating to watch the decision as to which ploughed, muddy field was the best one.

Anyone else noticed rooks present around rookeries? Not renovating nests as such but maybe just re-familiarising themselves with them
