River levels here have been very high, and very fast flowing. I suspect that's probably not good news for local kingfishers, although maybe other waterways might temporarily become viable feeding areas where they are normally not.
My lunch time walks by Tocil Pools are a great way to break up a work day 🙂 this December we have gooseanders outnumbering the mallard and tufted ducks combined. Never seen so many in one place. Egret count is up to 4 on some days and the usual grey herons are about.
spent a few minutes watching the Pinkies fly in this evening. Some of the first arrivals landed in one field and the rest the other side of the path/hedges. They stood and honked at each other for ages. The next dozen or so flew in and chose the western field. The ones the other side honked a bit and then two at a time chose to fly over to the other field. Then some more came in and chose the eastern field - so some from the western one joined them. This pattern went on for ages. I assume that eventually they'll all be in the same place, but it was fascinating to watch the decision as to which ploughed, muddy field was the best one.
