Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I saw a swallow today, I thought they'd all gone now as I hadn't seen one for a while.

Gross, don't read on if eating .. Pigeon population control is well and truely back. Got home from work, went to feed the birds and startled the sparrowhawk.

It was feeding on another pigeon, that is at least three in the last couple of weeks. Interesting that there is a gaping hole in the breast, so looks like it goes for the breast meat first.

I'm going to leave the carcass for nature and clear any remains in a few days. If it goes I'd love to know what takes it

Not a bird, but an interesting nature thing...I was fascinated to watch the comings and goings from a hornets' nest in a hollow oak tree a couple of days ago. These things are HUGE! It's a bloody good job they're not aggressive like common wasps, otherwise we wouldn't stand a chance! The guy whose land it is on happened to be passing by, and explained he had put chicken wire across the base of the tree to stop badgers climbing up and raiding the nest (as well as keeping kids out).

The guy is something of a hero among local nature-lovers for the amount he does for wildlife - he has whole fields planted with crops to provide winter seed for birds, and has mown strips along the edges of the field to allow the public to wander hither and thither and appreciate nature. The biggest flock of linnets I've ever seen was there in winter a couple of years ago, probably tens of thousands.

:) like your local hero J2R - I'm fascinated by hornets. Every year we get one huge one in the house. Every year I trap it in a jar and take it to the coppice to release it - but we still get one back again the next year.

Saw the barn owl this evening :) - just as I was getting worried that it should have been around and I hadn't seen it it left a perch right in front of me :)

Also lots of skeins of geese flying northwards overhead this evening. No idea what type - quite high pitched honking.

Probably pink-footed - we get them in the fields here once the winter wheat comes up but once they're that high up I can't tell one type of goose from another

(once of Ralph's favourite pastimes is lifting a field full so they fly over the village and wake everyone up in the morning ;) ) -

Notable shift in the seasons here this week amongst the birdlife. My House Martins have packed up and left since the weekend (can't say I blame them!) and there has been an increase in the number of visitors to my feeders. This morning saw the first Long-tailed Tits of the autumn (though there always around they never come to the feeders in the summer months) and at one point I had five different species of Tit (Blue, Great, LTT, Coal and Willow) present at the same time. More regular visits from the Nuthatches and the Goldfinches too.
