Well, you've done best bit of the course; probably not worth bothering with the rest (especially as I'm sure you said last year you'd given up with the long stuff ;-))

Lovely in the daylight.

We are trying to work out if we are fast enough to make the early cut offs, and whether we really want to do it. If we do start, it will definitely be the last long event we do. Definitely.

Back to birds...

Did you hear any Cuckoos Jacdaw? There was at least one in each valley when I did that run a month ago and the ones in Duddon and Eskdale were still there a week ago but here my local one seems to have departed over the weekend.

No, FF, we heard a few a couple of weeks ago in the same area, but didn't hear any yesterday. All seem to have gone at home too. I saw something about radio tagged adults being back in France a week or two ago.

Fly-by Jay gave me a nice ‘garden tick’ last night. Plus high flying screaming swift :-)

I'm sure the cuckoos on my local patch have already headed off, as I haven't heard one for maybe 10 days or so. Cuckoos would not be held up as a model of responsible parenting, would they?

Sudden, puzzling drop in goldfinch numbers in the garden. They're normally by far the commonest bird, always on the feeders, but I'm hardly seeing any at the moment and I can't think why. I wonder are they off in the countryside, because of some bounty out there? Or something to do with hot dry weather of late. Very few chaffinches or greenfinches either. Odd.

Goldfinch are everywhere round here at the moment J2R, so maybe they've come to the Peak for a holiday? ;-)

Plenty of Chaffinch too at the moment.

Goldfinch v common in the Worth Valley. Chaffinch rare. We’ve got a pair of swallow busy feeding young on our property - a first for me heart
