I managed to visit the normally fabulous Titchwell Marsh reserve on the north Norfolk coast on Sunday without seeing much at all, which is a kind of reverse achievement! I missed the snowy owl which had been in the area for the previous couple of days (but had moved east along the coast overnight), and I didn't manage to see the long-tailed ducks which were offshore, nor the goldeneye (although I did see a great crested grebe on the sea, which I found odd as I'd only ever seen them on freshwater before). I did get good views of grey and ringed plovers, as well as avocets, Mediterranean gulls, pochards, teal, godwits, redshank, and a variety of geese, so it's probably not fair to say I didn't see much, just less than usual.

The best sighting, in fact, was a couple of bramblings on the feeders - we usually get them in small numbers in the garden in winter but I've hardly seen any this year. Still, a thoroughly enjoyable visit nonetheless, and positively balmy by comparison with how it often is there (i.e., with several layers of technical clothing and a good windproof, waterproof shell it was possible to avoid feeling frozen).

Whoopers were on the shore of Lough Neagh near Castle Dawson. They look like flocks of sheep from a distance

Things starting to move. No chiff this morning but the small wood is actually a nature reserve and looks great for birds :)
