Day out at Old Moor today, water levels were high and apart from some Snipe there was a complete lack of waders but we did have a raptor fest, Peregrine, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and a prolonged views of a Marsh Harrier. Also got a more than decent view of a Bittern flying above the reed beds. Also around 40 Greenfinches around some feeders, probably the most I've ever seen in one place (they have as good as disappeared around home ☹)

DT we appear to have over wintering Chiffchaffs here. Met two guys a couple ago who had independently found one about a mile from my place. Heard of other sightings locally too.

Apparently hawfinches not far from there flyingfinn, seen at Broomhill Flash. Bit late in the day now, admittedly.

Thanks Becca, I saw that in the sightings book but it appeared to be only one today and I didn't really have the time to go chasing it, especially when I've been able to see plenty at Darley Dale this winter.

Ah, nice if you've already seen them. I've still got to try this myself but getting to somewhere suitable early enough is the issue. Rufford Park, where I went looking last year, has come up trumps recently but it's a bit far from me.

Mr & Mrs Bramblings and Bullfinches today, along with most the tits and common finches on the feeders. A browny grey blur across the front of one of the hides had to be a sparrowhawk. And there was the usual resident water rail. Other than that the reserve was pretty bare, but if I was a bird in today's weather I'd have been hunkering down somewhere too!

Managed a lone redpoll just before sunset, just after the serious twitchers who been waiting for it for hours had gone home :)

Jizz = giss = general impression size and shape :-) The 'it's the size of a doodah and acting a bit like a thingymawotsit' school of birding :-)

Bonus of hunting merlin whilst waiting for the red poll (just a normal one, the arctic didn't show).

But also several chaffinches with deformed feet from that nasty warty virus they get :-( Poor little things.

Becca, I'm guessing that Darley Dale just north of Matlock is as close to you as Rufford? There have been around 15-20 there in the church yard and surrounds for the last month. Though I've just checked and the last reported sighting on the Derbyshire Birders fb page was last Thursday but not sure if that means they've gone or is due to reporting fatigue? I plan to drop in the next few days so I'll report back.

Quite far, flyingfinn, as I’m in central Leicester. There’s one that’s been hanging about near Hinckley but I’ve not had a chance to go.
