Gorgeous Goldcrest in the bush outside my window this morning. It has a very orange crest, so I was wondering if it could be a Firecrest. BTO website shows that it was a male Goldcrest, Firecrests are probably very unlikely this far North and West

On a general note most birds are looking really smart now in breeding plumage. Even relatively mundane species like mallard and pheasant are really glowing. The crest on the goldcrest I saw at the weekend was very evident even in horrible grey light

Was excited this morning on returning from my walk in the distance I could see a large bird on the barn roof as I got closer I was no wiser to what it was (my eye sight is not perfect and I didn't have any binoculars). As I got closer I willed it not to fly off and it was still there when I got in the farmyard.... anti-climax; a pigeon! lol

first Goldeneye for a long time yesterday, on a quick trip out to RSPB Fen Drayton.
And some lovely photos of a Kestrel just a few feet away in the late afternoon sun

Yellow hammers x 2, I think. They were pretty. I really struggle with our raptors. They're big, so most of them are buzzards, but a couple of them were kestrels I think. Goshawk? I dunno? G

HappyG that's right, buzzards and kestrels (which are smaller) are most likely what you will see in Fife, possibly sparrowhawk. I don't think you get Goshawks. Further north you would have a chance of White Tailed Sea Eagle. You would know if you saw one of them.
