You know, I wouldn't expect TTT to roll over and die quite as easily as this. Methinks the battle may not yet be over, I think I'm going to regard this as a temporary lull in hostilities. I bet they are trying to work around the MOD objections.

(or was it likely to be rejected and 'better' (for them) to withdraw, modify and resubmit later?)

Well, all I was trying to say is that they appear to have backed down on the premise of conflicting information from the MOD and on the surface it looked like they might try and resolve that and, if a positive outcome is gained, submit their application again. On reflection, I'm not sure they will ...... this will have cost them and there has been a massive lack of trust in various institutions as a consequence (esp. Cumbria Tourism). The fact that they withdrew their application has been widely reported on the basis that it's a done deal. Would they dare to resurrect? They'll have to have deep pockets.
I think the next serious matter on the agenda is the damage wreaked by United Utilities, a lawless organisation if ever there was one. As far as I know, there application for retrospective planning permission for the access road they've put in place to the top of Fisher Crag is still in place, though what it's purpose would be now is, of course, a matter of conjecture. I know that FOLD (of whom I'm a member) are very concerned about this and I know that Mr ZipOff (who is my guide and mentor ) will not rest until that ugly scar is returned to nature and I have to say that we should all support that. I love that side of Thirlmere and the woodland around Armboth is truly wild and unspoilt - apart from that hideous scar!
