Tadese has the WR for half marathon although hasn't run that fast recently.

Where did I say that? I said time trial, not record attempt, don't twist my words.

Tadese has a marathon best of 2:10 set five years ago, Nike are scraping the barrel with him.

Tadese has never achieved his potential though given he's the fastest HM of all time and given they are reducing something artificially to make this possible, he might be able to perform better

Not trying to twist your words but: "A stage managed time trial that will prove nothing unless one of the athletes can take at a huge chunk off the current WR at the very least (sub 2:02)." Unless makes it sound like you think this can be redeemed. It can't a hugh chuck doesn't prove anything if they can't do it in legitimate circumstances. (see the Gatlin video above).

A time trial might be annoying but would be legitimate. Haile Gebrselassie's WRs were essentially time trials but in race conditions (HG might have had the records but it was obvious that Wanjiru was the best marathoner at the time). If it was on Berlin course for example in normal conditions with a bunch of pacers and just those three actually running for a time, yes contrived but it would still be fine for record purposes. However this is going to be non record eligible because it simply can't be done as an eligible run.

My annoyance with it all might be causing me to nit pick though.

With Tadese, I'm sure he's crashed badly at other Marathons he's competed in, and that mediocre time from VLM 2012 was the best he could muster. Considering he's done next to nothing since then doesn't inspire me with confidence he can do anything.

Anyway, the whole point of my post was to express my annoyance that Kipchoge has chosen to take part in the vanity project of a major sports goods manufacturer rather than complete with his contemporaries on the world stage. That's why I love sport, intense competition is the most exciting spectacle in the world.

Back to the two hour project, Two Hours by Ed Caesar is a compelling read if anyone is more interested in this subject. That helps set out the criteria for a sub 2 attempt and it sounds like it could only be done under the most controlled conditions at this moment in time.

>You don't improve world records by minutes at elite level

Unless your name is Paula Radcliffe. She did a best of 2:15:25 at London in 2003. The previous record holder, Catherine Ndereba did 2:18:47 in 2001, which was itself 59 seconds faster than the world record set a week earlier. The women's world record came down by over 5 minutes in three and half years.

I'm pretty sceptical about what Nike are doing, but I wouldn't prejudge it as impossible.

Lot of skepticism over Paula of course too that won't go away... especially as no-one else can touch it.

Another good article on the sub 2... deadspin.com
