No probs fozzy, and you're absolutely right. In most things I'm not a "consumer" at all.

And even in cars, at the mo I buy 3 years old, keep for 3 years and the depreciation is minimal. The reason why I want a reasonably new car and then replace it is because I'm rubbish at car maintenance and I hate spending £1,000 with a garage for a service and feeling I'm getting fleeced. So I go to the main dealer, buy used, include the servicing, and then my costs are all understood.

Unfortunately, there is no "package" for getting a 5 year old 50,000 mile car and keeping in running for another 5-10 years and 150K miles and replacing bits on it all the time. I'd be constantly in garages and getting stung all the time.

So I'm afraid a car is a matter of convenience for me and I want it to just "work", so it has to be newish, fully maintained by someone else! With electric, that means I have to buy fairly new. And it just happens to be the model I "like" is the one I've got just now, because it's practical and it works! It actually goes better down our potholed farm drive than my wife's old Hyundai! :-) G

Back to charging points - are they all "compatible"? If you buy any electric car today, will it work at any of the different charging points that you see in car parks and at motorway service stations etc?

Happy - my Tesla friend has had no problems charging and has an app on his phone to indicate charging points. He drove it all to Germany and back

We have a Nissan LEAF, it's our main family car and has been for 3 1/2 years.

We have driven all over the UK in it and have very little trouble. Ishep is much more able to answer any techy questions, and I'll point him over here... I'd also always choose my MX-5 over the LEAF, unless I absolutely have to to.

Saving up for a Tesla when I replace Elmo in, probably about 5 year's time. luck

Whilst I was helping mum look for car-port options, we found them with solar panel roofs and built in car-chargers - certainly a potential option if you live in the right place/face the right direction.

Longer Tesla journeys definitely not an issue, but still need a bit of planning, particularly to get a supercharger, which is much quicker.
Happy - the sockets aren't all the same, if you go to the Zap map site it explains the difference, but it shouldn't make a massive difference to the ability to charge.
The main issue that I see in the near future is the availability of chargers when you need it as more people invest in EVs - that said I think most people will only need to charge overnight at home.

Tesla batteries might kill off combustion

bbc.co.uk

Interesting Tesla is locating a factory in Bristol to create them as Bristol University has also been researching in diamond batteries, a battery from nuclear waste that could run for 5000 years

One other thing, would Ensure the catalytic converters is housed internally than externally (like the Toyota Prius) as there is a lot of theft for the palladium and they can cut it out within a minute

Hoping battery tech and standards will evolve into modular replaceable batteries so that they can be swapped out at ‘filling stations’ rather than always having to recharge.
