Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Batteries in general used to develop a charging "memory" which basically meant if you regularly charged to 80% eventually it will only charge to 80% of the rated capacity. So has that problem been overcome, or are the manufacturers now making money selling additional tech in some way?

My normal take is that if batteries are designed to charge to 100%, that's what I'd do!

The memory problem was almost entirely a myth, and to the extent that it existed at all, it dates back about three generations of cell chemistry.

My reply was going to be similar to jda. NiCads in the 80s but not current Lithium ion or LiPo. That's my reading anyway.

Hi current DC charging can break down battery chemistry at the top % which is why charging slows down at the end was my simple understanding. :-) G

I'd be happy with that - and to assume the designers of the charging circuitry and software knows what they're doing. Thanks!

Just paid a premium 85p/kWh to charge at Instavolt in Garstang. I think I could have found cheaper at services on my route, but it was more pleasant to stop at Booths for lunch break. Made it home with 19% battery left.

I'm sure all you EV owners are aware that your current "free" VED ends on 31st March, and from 1st April it will cost you £195.

Seen a suggestion somewhere else that some EV owners, especially if their VED renewal is in April or May, are planning in mid March to cancel their current VED and make their vehicle SORN (and therefore not be able to drive it), then immediately change their mind, and take out another year's VED before 1st April, at the current £0 rate.

If you can time it, and don't mind not driving your car for a few days (not sure how long exactly after declaring it SORN you can re-apply to tax it), then looks a decent way to save a few pounds.

Anyone up for that, or too much hassle ?

Tax is what pays for the NHS etc. We've had a good discount for the last few years, I'm happy to pay the tax (May for me)

There's definitely a loophole that can be used. A competent govt (!) would ensure that either the loophole doesn't exist, or if it knowingly exists is expected to be used by a proportion of taxpayers.

I don’t think you can really call it a loophole, there has to be a date from which the tax applies, and before which it doesn’t.

True. But the ability to sacrifice the period remaining on an existing "tax disc" so that you can then "buy" a new one to push out the impact of the higher rate is not a million miles away from being a "loophole". Whatever it is called, it is an intentional manipulation of the rules to the tax payers advantage.
