Yes larkim I agree that a net uphill route is noticeably worse for us but the overall round trip is usually ok. Motorway (with a tandem on the roof) was the really big effect, even driving gently we were just under 4mi/kWh for the long trips (probably 3.5 on the motorway section?) whereas close to 5 (occasionally more) for local drives. At overnight rates, the cost doesn't really matter, but the loss of range could on occasion. The 79p/unit still rankles though. That was just the 12 units on the way up, the rest of the week was about 35p at various chargers, all of which worked just fine once we'd worked out which order to push the various buttons... |

This seems a fairly well balance article on the current situation: bbc.co.uk Sounds like HMG need to get their finger out, especially in the light of their current back-tracking on many things which would help with climate change in the name of cost. And re-electability! |

Don’t think the govt should be funding any car infrastructure personally. Plenty of countries have free public transport, that would be a better outcome for British people I think |

Agree Fields, in principle. But while public transport better than car, electric car better than petrol/diesel car, so gov't have to choose whether to help that change too. And politically, if they are banning new petrol/diesel sales from 2030, then there needs to be enough infrastructure to support electric vehicles too. City centre owners may need most help with public chargers, because no off street parking. Conservative government may roll back on the 2030 pledge anyway, given current mood music? ![]() |

Bob!
Agree with Fields. Greatly improved public transport would mean less people needing to have their own car ( of any type), but it seems all governments are too invested in 'growth' to be able to do the right thing and to transition away from personal vehicles |

[Arguably, they're not doing well on any of their pledges. But that's a different thread!] Also agree that longer term more public transport is better (more energy efficient, anyway), especially in urban areas. It just isn't terribly practical where there is a low population density and people wanting to travel in different directions. In the meantime, there's precedent for Government/state funding to support significant fuel changes - like when we moved to Natural Gas from Town Gas in the 1970s - remember all those burners and boilers that needed to be checked and changed? Although of course, the "Gas Board" was a nationalised industry back in those days. |

Other than investing in the battery plant, I'm not sure there was much taxpayers / govt money in that article looking at infrastructure. As far as I can see, private operators are the ones delivering the charging infrastructure, not the govt. Maybe behind the scenes they are supporting, but I've not seen it if they are (in England).

bbc.co.uk Well, this is likely to fan the flames (!) of myth and rumour about EVs going up in flames... (And of course, RIP to the mariner who has lost their life here as well as thoughts with those injured). |

25 electric out of 3,000 vehicles on transport ship. Was it def an EV fire that caused it? Perhaps EV's should be transported in fire proof storage of some sort? I keep the Lithium batteries for my toy cars and planes in fire proof bags, as recommended. Car transporters not expected to do same? ![]() |

Surelynot
The accident is a terrible tragedy, but how qualified is a member of the coastguard to analyse the cause of a fire on a vessel that's still burning?
