Suspect the range will be weather affected fuzzy. After a few weeks in the warmer weather I've had my car reporting 185-190 miles range, as soon as it's turned cooler that's dropped to 170.

My car certainly doesn't "learn" about how I drive as I'd expected, it's range is almost entirely dependent on the previous few miles of driving before it is parked up, coupled with some adjustment for ambient temperatures. Though perhaps the VW is smarter.

Took the e208 up to the Lake district in the summer and parked up at the top of the WryNose Pass with range showing something like 90 miles remaining. Got back in at the end of the day and laughed at the >50% charge status but only 48 mile range prediction due to the 25% climb up. And then even better within a mile of cruising back down the hill mainly in B mode it predicted 284 miles for that half a tank! Pretty extreme example but just shows you how parked up range is massively influenced by the last few miles of driving and bears no relation at all to the driving done even in the (say) last 50 miles or last couple of hours of use. Just posting this for the amusement factor really though!

Hybrids are a bit bonkers because it's double the tech, more to go wrong and unless you are a fairly specialist person (mostly do 5-10 miles max in a city centre, but occasionally do 250 miles - maybe London types?!) then can't see point. More to go wrong too! But if you're a rep, presumably, they pay the car and servicing.

I'd agree, there aren't many cars that will do your 300 mile one way trip without a top up. As a road warrior, presumably you do that in one go, no loo or coffee stops? If so, then how do you feel adding 45 mins to an hour on to your journey? If you normally do it in just over 4 hours, that's quite a lot to add on?

Top of the range will do the full distance. Merc EQS, Tesla Model S Long Range and Plaid, Lucid Air, BMW iX but those might not be options for you? :-) G

Hanging around for 40 mins for my car to be able continue the journey is my worst nightmare. Well, that and needing to go somewhere say 150 or 200 miles from home and my sat nav saying sorry you can’t go that far

A customer who is very happy with his Leaf mentioned Tesla Model S LR as an option for me, but it’s beyond my likely budget. I think it’ll be one more fossil fuel car before I go electric

For your case DT, I think I agree. I've said it before, these things aren't ready for road warriors yet! Or the people that need to see the business benefit are the fleet operators - where the lower cost of fuel and servicing offsets the higher cost of purchase and they "mandate" Tesla S Long Range for you! :-) G

On that sort of mileage it’s presumably not really a long-term investment either….they may be a bit better in 5 years…(and/or charging a bit more accessible and convenient).

Model S is a big jump size-wise from a Golf, DT - what about a used Model 3 LR - over 300 miles is not a problem, even when being pretty rapid. I find that a short pit stop at a supercharger (loo, take away coffee ) and you are away.

Colleague of mine who's a bit of a petrol head test drove a Tesla 3 Performance at weekend. He was somewhat impressed by the performance! :-) G

DT - do you not require a 30min break in a 300mi trip? I certainly would need at least one. That's your charging break. And if its 40min instead of 30min does that matter?

But the real question for you (and your company) should be - is the trip necessary in the first place? Could you meet virtually instead?

(this is an aside and not aimed at anyone in particular, but there are many journeys - including an awful lot of flying - that just aren't necessary and are often companies doing things in an old fashioned way)

And if that 300mi trip only the happens once a year instead of once a month (for example) - would I be cheaper to hire an ICE for that trip and use an EV for everything else?

Flexible vehicle ownership has to be part of the right way forward. As you suggest, a EV for day to day (of whatever size - from scooter through to a "normal" sized car) and then easy access to "something bigger" only when needed.

It isn't straightforward to put into practice though. If we all had small EVs and then the moment the summer holidays began we all suddenly needed big estate cars to take us on UK holidays there'd have to be a stock of such cars waiting to be used, so the seasonality of it would be a risk for the company providing those cars. Not insurmountable, and could just be passed on as a cost, but just one example of how things would need to change.

Our household is lucky with access to 2 cars; an EV for the 12000 miles a year I drive in commuting, and a big diesel guzzling 8 seater for when the large family needs carrying around (plus a small amount of commuting for my better half). Definitely suits us well, but I doubt we're "normal".

My Kia Soul currently gets 260 miles yet a work colleague who has an eNiro that has the same battery and drivetrain recently got 305 miles on a charge. But he is like driving miss daisy which obviously pays off.
