Every time the home call, my heart stops.

Thankfully mum seems really settled and happy at the moment. Has a couple of friends in the home and has just moves rooms to be near them

Yup. Me too. Especially as Mum never calls unless something is wrong.

My heart sinks every time our house phone rings. About 90% of the time its MiL and it usually means Mrs Axe is being asked to do something. We do get some calls from carers or the falls team when there is an incident. The remainder are the odd scam/sales type calls which thankfully are infrequent.

We have had a few through the night calls from the falls team. The phone actually just rang a few mins ago but Mrs Axe still in bed and I am working but I heard a message from MiL so need to go and listen. I am off on Friday and we are going round to do a few small jobs - I think it was in relation to that.

Had one of the calls at 00.28am this morning from the care home. Mum had a raging temperature again and they were worried about the sepsis situation. Ambulance called, covid test done (neg thankfully). Luckily got everything under control and she is still at the home. Am meant to be visiting today

I came back from my run last night and Mrs Axe was on the phone to her Mum and the carer who was in attendance. There has been lots of bleeding from down below and this has been going on for a few days but no one had thought to say anything :-(. The usual carer was just back tonight after a few well earned days off.

We have been here before with one A&E visit, two cystoscopies and one colonoscopy all of which showed no issue.

Bleeding is one of the signs of a UTI we believe and so Mrs Axe will be on the phone to the GP when they open up at 8am. Mrs Axe didnt sleep much last night.

Hello everyone! Long time lurker here but rare poster however after a weekend where the wheels began properly falling off I may be offloading a bit more (blog has the nitty gritty)

A summary of my situation is:
Mum 84 Dad 85
He is relatively fit despite having had stents due to heart disease and familial high cholesterol which is controlled with statins (they still have blue top milk, butter etc) but is severely visually impaired due to glaucoma.
She has been on antihypertensives for a long time but when we visited 2 weeks ago had clearly aged since seen last summer. Obviously swollen feet and ankles, we could see she had a knee problem and a surreptitious review of their medicine cupboard (its in the bathroom) revealed a hefty dose of diuretic and an anticlotting agent. Still driving although she has done little of that during COVID. Volunteers at the Oxfam shop pricing books.

Thankfully they downsized in 2018 from ahuge Edwardian semi in Plymouth to a 2 bed, ground floor flat by the river in Exeter. My youngest brother lives in Teighmouth and works in Exeter. The other two are in Malvern and Birmingham, we are in Buckingham so in all cases taking off the extra miles beyond Exeter have vastly improved the journey.

They both tend to overestimate their abilities (a common theme I am sure) and also till now have only told us what they think we need to know.

Actually I think I am better off not knowing that he has been up a ladder hanging pictures with his nose to the wall.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
