I was diagnosed with this about 10 years ago. At the time I was experiencing quite severe pain after running (although strangely not during) This was found to be due to some small bits of bone that had grown into the joint. I had these removed under day surgery and had to lay off running while I recovered. But since then I've had no further problems, although the toe remains stiff. Only effect seems to be that I tend to land and push off a little more towards the outside of the foot more than most runners.

all interesting stuff, I only weigh 8st I am 5ft tall and 42 so dont know if I can loose much more weight, I could try and see if it helps. AS did your doctor send you for xrays? Mine was useless, just told me to find another sport, never even touched my toe, just looked at it!

I'd started off by going to a private podiatrist who was doing a special offer on consultations - I think must have had the X ray through them. But their only remedy was to fuse the bones together, which would have left me unable to do any exercise and with a limp. So I ran a mile (while I still could!) and ended up getting a second opinion from the private doctor who ended up doing the op. It cost me a fair bit, but the wait back then for an NHS referral was so long and I wasn't prepared to put up with months more of pain.
I know it's easy for me to say, but I think you should go back to your GP and insist on a referral. If the GP says they won't do that without an X Ray, then you should ask for that. Your situation may well be treatable, or at least could be improved - and I don't think you should be denied that possibility just because of an unhelpful GP.

Right. Had xray and it showed ostiarthritis, I was referred to a podiatrist, who I saw last week, he confirmed Hallux ridgidus and has put me an insert in my everyday work shoes, I feel really peed off that he cant offer any other treatment, I have got to go back in a month to see how the insert has been, at the moment it feels like I have a big lump under my arches, I have been trying for the last year to get my feet as natural as possible and have worked hard to make my running style more efficient, I no longer push off or land on my heel and dont get shin pain anymore. I feel that this is now going in the opposite direction. I am still running as it doesnt hurt when I run, but it does hurt at all other times, perhaps I should just run everywhere - fed up

Just read back on the thread. Lots of interesting stuff for one who is injured. I have what is now a bad, swollen bunion. Ran the coastal run in July, damaged the soft tissues and ligaments in my right foot. Needless to say to be broken would have been easier. After 2 xrays dDocs given me anti inflammatories but these do little if anything. Not much sympathy for my hobby either. But some 7 weeks on,my bunion is still very sore and am unable to bend foot at the toes, so even the slightest of movements are painful. Lost for solutions other than taking up walking on my hands
