Real pity that Hameed has to come back home for an op. His 59 not out led the way today -despite a broken hand and he changed gear when Root went going on the attack. That slog sweep to get a 6 for his fifty was beautifully timed. I know I'm biased being a Lancastrian but he will be missed.

In the Lions squad is Liam Livingstone. I reckon he has a good future ahead too -although nowhere near an opener.

Hameed is going to be in the team for at least a decade. So we have an opening partnership to tonk the aussies ☺

I hope Hameed does work out long term. Word of caution though, Ballance made a great start to his Test career. Compton scored runs and looked solid when he first came in. Robson and Lyth both scored centuries. And don't forget Trott, brilliant record but people called for his head because he scored too slowly.

True, but we have an awesome set of buffers down the order, problem for years has been the 30-3 starts. Besides Hameed has the look of Root in that he can accelerate/adapt according to the situation, whereas the like of Trotton etc had only one gear.

But caution, early days etc, but the technical fundamentals appear to be there.

No doubt he'll now Ave 9 over the next 15 tests....;-)

I always liked Trotters, sorry. Pity he's not English.

Are we going to firm up the untouchables XI today?

I think we're going to end up with a 2nd XI, actually. Which means both our keepers can get a game if nothing else - and Dilip Doshi doesn't have to compete with Bedi.

Our team for the last Test included two keepers and three spinners*, so maybe we don't need a second XI?
