Wriggling Snake
I am struggling to think of the very first game of cricket I went and watched, that's odd as I can well remember my first live football game (QPR v Arsenal), apart from my Dad's Over 30s postmen v Under 30s postmen, Hyde Park (you could rent pitches back then) NW london division. The old guys won, my dad taking a running catch on the boundary, but batting like Babe Ruth. Telly-wise it was JPL, Barry Richards. |

My first game would have been JPL, quite clearly. Couldn't tell you who, but the Essex team of the day is imprinted on my brain like no side before or since in any sport or at any level - including teams I've played in. For all that my generation bleat about T20, I was the same as a kid - JPL was the glamourous and exciting league, everything else was a bit dull. My dad used to despair of the death of proper cricket at the hands of JPL. |

I never warmed to Bob Woolmer. And he coached "foreign teams". Poor show.

My first live match was Notts v Derbyshire at Ilkeston. County Championship. Gary Sobers and Derek Randall. Derby batted all day, so never saw them bat. Mike "Pasty" Harris shouted "catch it" to virtually every ball, even if they hit it for four.

Lancashire against Derbyshire at Liverpool. I remember that Lancashire declared on 406-4 and Clive Lloyd scored a very quick unbeaten century, but not, for example, that Dicky Bird was umpiring. cricketarchive.com |

Rather disgracefully test matches only for me. Never been to a County game, or indeed any ODI's or T20's. It was England vs Australia at Lord's, 1985, days 1-3. We went to see Botham; and were delighted when we batted first. A few wickets fell and the great man was at the crease a couple of balls before lunch, one of which he smeared to the boundary leaving us salivating over a few lunch pints with the thought of the mayhem to come. Straight after lunch he went big and aerial; we cheered as the ball sailed away...only to see an Australia on the boundary pouch the catch. Most of the remainder of the 3 days was watching Border bat IIRC....:-( |

I went to the Edgbaston test in that same series, think most of the first two days were rain. Then Richard Ellison swung the ball like a banana and got the Australian top 5 out in a morning, and then Gower batted like a dream. My mate and I lived in his Vauxhall Viva for the duration of the test, which was....nice. |
