They do play cricket in rain, although admittedly it is normally limited to only light drizzle. With rain normally comes bad light (from the dark rain clouds) and this makes it very hard to see the dark red ball for the batsmen (who are trying to see it against the white background of the sightscreen) but especially the fielding team who don't have the same luxury.

Nelly - the last day of a test always has special regulations about when it finishes, number of overs etc. to stop naughty people wasting time etc. I believe the "final hour" starts at 6pm regardless of how much time was lost earlier and there are 15 overs to play at that point.

SoaPM - try playing cricket with a proper ball in heavy rain (or poor light) and you'll quickly realise why it's not a good idea. That's before you start on stuff like the ball getting damaged.

I've never played the game, not very popular here in Scotland. I suppose they could make waterproof balls and I know there are white balls for nighttime games. It could only be light rain, not heavy.

I'm loving the description of "proper hard, northern rain" on the BBC website's ball-by-ball page :-)

Light rain typically doesn't stop the game. The ball needs to be leather with a raised, stitched seam otherwise the whole character of the sport would be changed - no more swing or seam bowling, for example. Even baseball games in US stop for heavy rain - and there (unlike cricket) the bounce of the ball is irrelevant. So making it waterproof seems like a non-starter.

Wonder if Clarke is regretting his decision to ignore the weather forecast and bat for so long yesterday? I suppose they may still yet have time to win the game, but it seems like he would've been better served by making England bat for some of yesterday afternoon?

Maybe I won't be heading to OT for 5:30 then :-p

Ashes retained :-) although ideally it would have been clinched on the pitch rather than sat in the changing room watching the rain fall.

Doctor K
My highlights from 2 days of test cricket (Thurs/Sat) Clarke's brilliant innings on Thursday and a very good one from Pietersen on Saturday. Ian Bell was also very good for his 60 and plays the late cut (a bit out of fashion these days) superbly.
