I was just wondering if he was worth his place. Turns out he was. I think he is. It just seems to be a good partnership. Neither of them go consistently big, but they do consistently get starts. And this stat is just mad: twitter.com (this is the third time that Joe Root has come in at 160-2 or better in the Stokes era; never happened before). With the caveat that he played a lot of tests at number 3 (I haven't looked at the actual figures), that is an amazing turnaround. |

*If* England bat 2 sessions tomorrow, then they are somewhere near level at least on first innings. If they can bat all day then the pressure will all be on India.

Ravi Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test for a family emergency - I wish him well. My query is that the rules state India can only have a sub fielder to replace him. 2 things. 1. The rule should be updated to allow for a direct replacement i.e. a spin bowler 2. The England managemnt would gain a lot of respect if they approached the BCCI and suggested they were willing to allow said replacement given the circumstances (if both teams agree along with the umpires, then no issue?). |

Don't think they can because it's not covered under the laws of the game and/or playing regulations. Only substitutions allowed are under concussion protocols I believe. Unfortunately this situation is more akin to an injured player who is unable to take the field |

Maybe we could reciprocate by one of our all rounders not bowling? Maybe Ben Stokes? [haven’t seen what the family emergency is so wish him and his family well] |

We could just call up Gavin Hamilton. That would have the same effect.
